Christchurch Economic Development Strategy (CEDS)
The Christchurch Economic Development Strategy (CEDS) will reposition Christchurch within the regional and New Zealand economy, by describing an ambitious vision, setting bold goals and identifying a range of actions that will dramatically increase the city’s rate of economic growth.
Developed by the Canterbury Development Corporation (CDC) on behalf of the Christchurch City Council (CCC), CEDS takes an evidence based approach in order to identify and prioritise actions to guide future economic development investment in Christchurch.
Over the past twelve months the city has undertaken wide-ranging research and economic modelling to understand the economic environment, the make-up of the Christchurch economy and its distinctiveness. This model has been refined by engaging with over 650 Christchurch businesses to understand their drivers, constraints and long-term business goals. To be a globally competitive city, Christchurch cannot simply do the same as it has always done. Christchurch needs to differentiate itself and start thinking and acting like the second biggest city in New Zealand. We need to grow Christchurch in a manner which builds on the city’s role as the natural hub of the South Island economy, while preserving and enhancing our superior quality of life.
The draft strategy document encapsulates the major issues and opportunities identified throughout the consultation process, and identifies seventeen headline projects to address these. It is still being refined, and is provided here to keep the business and community sectors aware of our thinking and intended direction. The strategy will be presented to Christchurch City Council for endorsement on 23 July 2010.
